Unlike other age groups, teens are the most difficult to fit for golf clubs. Teens have a very large range of abilities (from beginners to Tour levels); strengths (some have gone through puberty and others have not) and heights ( some are full grown and others have yet to have a growth spurt).
When it comes to teen golfers, knowing your teen’s ability and experience is critical when selecting the appropriate golf clubs. What does this mean? Let us break it down for you.
The main differentiator between beginner and competitive teen golfers is their swing speed and their ability to make consistent contact. For beginner golfers, their swing speeds will be slower and they will be making inconsistent contact with the ball.
Over the past few years, adult golf clubs have become increasingly customizable. As a result, many adult golf clubs can be customized for teen use. For example, many men’s golf clubs are now available in one and two inch shorter lengths with a variety of flex options including ladies flex, senior (A) flex, graphite shafts and steel shafts. Unfortunately these customizable options are significantly more expensive than traditional boxed sets so we here at AllKidsGolfClubs do not recommend them for beginner and intermediate players.
What makes a teen golf set special?
The engineering and technology of teen golf clubs set them apart from junior golf sets and adult sets.
- Lighter weight and more flexible shafts for slower swing speeds: When a child has slower swing speeds, it is harder to get distance behind their hits, if they use clubs that aren’t designed for them. What does this mean? This means, if a child uses adult clubs with a swing speed under 80 mph, they will have a hard time getting the ball of the ground. A teen golfer who’s swing speed is 80 mph and uses a teen golf set, will be able to launch the ball due to the lightweight club heads and graphite shafts. The graphite shafts have technology that allow them to be flexible, bend, and harness all of that power into launching the ball. Most adult golf set wouldn’t bend due to the child not having enough power behind their swing. There are certain adult golf sets that teens can use, which we also offer here at AllKidsGolfClubs.
- Larger club heads result in larger sweet spots making it easier for consistent contact
Most teen golf clubs and sets are best for beginner to intermediate level golfers who have yet to meet their full height and adult strength.
