Junior Fairway Woods for Kids
When is the appropriate time to add a fairway wood to your juniors golf bag? Junior development is uneven, therefore recommendations are based on patterns of height, strength, and skill level typically acquired for certain age ranges. That being said, golfers 9 years old and younger do not need a Fairway Wood. If they are struggling to hit their driver well, a junior this young should replace their driver with a hybrid.
Age 10-14: Three Reasons to Add A Fairway Wood
- Add a Fairway Wood if your junior wants the distance of a driver. More skilled juniors with faster swing speeds can use a 3 wood. If your child has a slower swing speed a 5 wood would match more appropriately. Since 5 woods for left handed juniors are hard to find, a 3 wood will work in its place.
- Add a Fairway Wood if your child is using a driver off the tee and frequently missing the fairway or mis-hitting the club. In replacement of the driver, a 5 wood will bring your junior far more accuracy. All club lofts vary by manufacturer, so a 5 wood will be around an 18 degree lofted fairway wood.
- Add a Fairway Wood if your junior is more skilled and needs a club to gap the distance between his driver and hybrid. In this case, the best fit fairway wood will have a loft in between that of his hybrid and driver. He should be looking to gap the distance only once he has mastered his driver and hybrid.

Differences Between Junior, Teen, & Adult Fairway Woods:
Loft Differences: Check the Loft, Not the Label!
Junior and Teen Fairway Woods lofts vary among manufacturers. AllKidsGolfClubs junior and teen fairway woods have lofts that vary from 15 degrees to 27 degrees. A junior’s fairway wood loft should be lower than the hybrid and higher than the driver in his bag.
Junior Fairway Woods are higher lofted than Adult Fairway Woods. It’s typical to see a junior fairway wood up to 10 degrees higher than a comparable adult fairway wood. Make sure to examine your fairway woods loft and not rely on the title “3 Wood” or “5 Wood.”
Availability Differences: Save Yourself the Search!
- Fairway Woods are uncommon junior clubs. You will be quick to learn by searching “junior fairway wood” ; likely a 3 Wood, 5 Wood, or Fairway Wood will be the only search results. This will save you time when searching for junior fairway woods. AllKidsGolfClubs does offer custom teen 7 fairway wood options but these are more expensive than stock junior 3 wood and 5 woods.
